Whoever knew dropping a golf ball could cost a player $400,000?

That's just what happened to Englishman Ian Poulter on Sunday when he went to replace his ball on his marker and dropped it from a few inches above the ground, falling victim to one of golf's more arcane rules.
The blunder cost Poulter a shot and helped Swede Robert Karlsson win $1.25 million at the Dubai World Championship, the final event of the European Tour season.
Poulter's second prize is impressive nonetheless at $833,000.
Poulter and Karlsson were locked in a playoff on the 18th hole of the Dubai Earth course after four rounds in the desert where both finished at 14 under. The first playoff hole was tied and on the second playoff hole -- again on the 18th -- Poulter left himself with a massive 40-foot putt while Karlsson's chip to the green landed within 4 feet of the pin.
But as the English golfer marked his ball, it slipped from his grasp and fell on the marker, which jumped in the air and turned over.
Poulter let the match referee know immediately.
"Ian Poulter called me over just after he had marked the ball on the 18th and told me he had dropped his ball onto the ball marker which caused the ball marker to move, it just flipped over," chief match referee Andy McFee said. "This incurred a one stroke penalty."
So instead of trying to force another playoff hole, Poulter realized his putt was for a 5. Poulter shrugged, putted and missed, while Karlsson holed his short putt. The gallery of a couple of thousand spectators was unaware of the drama.

Today, November 1st 2010 is the 10th anniversary of my good friend and collegue. I remember he started 10 years ago with a little overweight like Ronaldo in his last season.

After a couple of months hard labour, love and running, his body looks almost like the other Ronaldo; Christiano Ronaldo.

...and his running skills are not far from living legend Haile Gebreselassie.

He also likes his beers, like myself, Gaza and Theo.

It's confirmed! BMW drivers have more sex drive. Based on a report from Reuters (3 May 2004), BMW drivers have more sex than owners of any other cars. A German magazine "Men's Car" surveyed more than 2,253 car drivers (aged between 20 to 50) and determined that male BMW drivers have sex about 2.2 times a week.

Patrick Battiston is remembered for the 1982 FIFA World Cup semi final in Seville, when France faced West Germany. He came off the bench in the second half, and after ten minutes of play, following a through ball by Platini, Battiston was clear through the German defence racing towards goal. The German goalkeeper, Harald Schumacher, raced towards Battiston as the Frenchman took the shot, missing the goal. Schumacher leapt into the air, twisting his body and colliding with Battiston. In the process Schumacher's hip hit the Frenchman's face. Battiston, clattered, fell to the ground unconscious, with damaged vertebrae and teeth knocked out, later slipping into a coma. As I'm watching the Olympic hockey final (Canada vs USA) as we speak, I need to mention "the great one", Wayne Gretzky: he is widely considered the greatest hockey player of all-time. At the time of his retirement at the end of the 1998-99 NHL season he was the NHL's all-time scoring leader in Goals, Assists & Points in both the regular season & Stanley Cup Playoffs. He led the NHL in scoring a record 10 times, was Captain of 4 Stanley Cup Championship teams, and was named the league's MVP a record 9 times. He is the only NHL player ever to score 200 Points in a season, and did so 4 times in the span of 5 years. A great ambassador of pro sports, he was also named the NHL's Most Gentlemanly Player 4 times and received the Order of Canada (their highest civilian honor) in 1998. Upon his retirement in 1999, his trademark jersey No. 99 was retired by the NHL.

Last Sunday the 10th WinterTrial started in Sankt Wolfgang and I was lucky to be present in Austria. Beautiful old cars (al least before 1977) prepared for snow, ice and trial competition. They have stages through Austria, Slovenia, Czech Republic and again Austria. Watch out for car number 49! A Porsche 911 S from 1967 with a short wheel base.

Van de Velde nearly achieved an upset victory at the 1999 Open Championship at Carnoustie, when he was the clear leader playing the closing holes. He arrived at the 18th tee needing only a double-bogey six to become the first Frenchman since 1907 to win the tournament. He had played error-free golf for much of the week and birdied the 18th hole in two prior rounds.

Despite a three-shot lead, Van de Velde chose to use his driver off the tee, and proceeded to drive the ball to the right of the burn and was lucky to find land. Rather than laying up and hitting the green with his third, Van de Velde decided to go for the green with his second shot. His shot drifted right and hit the grandstands on the side of the green and bounced fifty yards backwards into knee deep rough.

On his third shot, Van de Velde's club got tangled in the rough on his downswing, and his ball flew into the Barry Burn. He removed his shoes and socks and gingerly stepped through shin-deep water as he debated whether to try to hit his ball out of the Barry Burn, which guards the 18th green. Ultimately, he took a drop and proceeded to hit his fifth shot into the greenside bunker. Van de Velde blasted to within six feet from the hole, and made the putt for a triple-bogey seven, dropping him into a three-way playoff with Justin Leonard and Paul Lawrie. Lawrie would eventually triumph in the playoff.
